TREZZINI Domenico Andrea

An architect and engineer. Is Swiss. Since 1703 worked in Russia.

Trezzini designed the most famous buildings in the city during the period of its foundation.The Alexander Nevsky Laura (Monastery)   and Kronshtadt were laid according the projects of Trezzini, in 1706 the reconstruction of the Peter and Paul's Fortress was started, the part of the regular planning of Vassilievsky Island was made, the Summer Palace of Peter the Great in the Summer Garden, the Peter's Gate and Peter and Paul's Cathedral of the Peter and Paul's Fortress, the Building of Twelve Collegiums, the Galernaya Harbour and the great number of the non-preserved buildings (Gostinny Dvor, the 2-nd Winter Palace and others).

Trezzini designed the typical project of the living houses for the different people classes ("renowned", "prosperous" and "base") and out-of-town cottages according the order of Peter the Great. Trezzini's constructions are characteristic of the earliest Russian baroque. Their planning is regular, the inner decoration is modest and the architectural elements are combined with the baroque details. Initially Trezzini lived in Greek Sloboda ( the part of the city near the river Moika embankment and Millionnaya street), then - in his own house (built in 1720-s, preserved with rebuilt appearance) on Vassilievsky Island, at the corner of the University embankment (h.21) and the 5-th Line. Was buried in the Cemetery near St.Sampsony's Church (St.Sampsony's Cathedral today ), his grave is not preserved.
