The museum devoted to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) was opened in 1971. It is housed in the apartment where the composer spent the last 15 years of his life and wrote eleven of his fifteen operas, including Sadko, Le Coq d'Or and The Tale of TsarSaltan.
The interiors of the study, drawing-room, dining-room and hall have been restored to look like they did in the composer's lifetime. All the furnishings and items on display are authentic. Documentary materials trace Rimsky-Korsakov's career, touching on the cultural and musical life of the period and describing the famous "Korsakov's Wednesdays" that attracted Fedor Chaliapin, Mikhail Vrubel, Valentin Serov, Sergei Rakhmaninov, Alexander Scriabin, Igor Stravinsky, Vladimir Stasov and other celebrities of the theatre and music world. Among the various gifts is the greeting address given by Vrubel to mark the 35th jubilee of the composer's career.
The museum continues to hold the traditional "Korsakov's Wednesdays" along with other musical soirees.
