The museum of Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleyev (1834-1907), the great chemist who established the periodic law of the elements, was founded in 1911 on the initiative of participants of the 2nd Mendeleyev Congress, who proposed the opening of a memorial study, dedicated to the scholar, at St. Petersburg University. In 1953 this study was converted into a museum.
The museum is accommodated in Mendeleyev's former flat in the University building where he lived from 1866 to 1890 as professor and head of the department of chemistry. This flat was often the venue of "Mendeleyev's Wednesdays", which were attended by noted scientists and artists such as Ivan Kramskoi, Arkhip Kuinji, Ilya Repin and Vladimir Stasov.
The exhibits provide insights into Dmitry Mendeleyev's life and work as a scholar and teacher. His study, enormous library, laboratory equipment and collection of art reproductions have all been lovingly preserved.
